“Ready?” asked Charles as he rejoined Anita by the door to the garage.

“Sure,” she said with a smile. Seeing her grin made Charles smile as well. He stood for a moment just gazing at her, drinking her in. She laughed. “What’s that look for?”

“Oh, nothing, I just love hearing your laughter and seeing your smile. It’s great to know I have that effect on somebody, at least.”

“You two had another fight, didn’t you?” Anita asked.

He shrugged. “I’d rather not talk about her, if you don’t mind.”

Anita’s phone rang, and the ID said it was Megan. “Looks like we might be doing that anyway. Come on, let’s head out of here. I don’t like knowing that an angry, possibly vindictive woman could be lurking around the corner listening to our every word or something. It kind of creeps me out. Hello?”

Charles led the way to a red T-bird, grabbed its keys off the peg on the wall, and opened the passenger door. Anita smiled appreciatively as he helped her inside.

“Yes, everything is fine,” she said into the phone. “He just wanted to take me home. To talk, yes. No, no, I’m sure it’s fine. Giselle is in her bedroom, most likely staring at a wall or something. Or talking on the phone with her lover about tomorrow’s tryst for all we know.”

Charles snorted derisively as he started the car.

“Wow, she’s really got you pissed, hasn’t she?” said Anita, looking over at him. “I’m so sorry, Charles. I wish I knew how to make it easier. Here, I’m going to put the good doctor on speaker so we can all talk about this. So, Megan, what are your thoughts?”

“It’s just like you said before,” she replied. “Her answers were all over the board, disjointed even. None of them seemed to be consistent. I believe we’re dealing with some very severe dissociation. She’s so removed from herself that she doesn’t even know how she really feels about much of anything. She may be multi-personal, and shifting during the tests. That could explain why nothing made any sense.”

“Since we’re discussing my wife, I may as well tell you that she just referred to you as my ‘precious’ Anita Brown and accused me of planning to replace her with you,” Charles mentioned.

Anita cringed. “Aren’t you?” she pointed out.

“Well, yeah, the thought had crossed my mind, but it wasn’t like that,” he protested. He drove the car out onto the road and headed south. “Anita, you know that, right? What I feel for you—it’s not like what she’s saying. I don’t want to discuss it here and now with a third party on the phone, but—it’s nothing like the torrid thing she was suggesting.”

“Calm down, will you?” Anita said. “I know what you’re trying to say. But can we discuss Giselle right now? As in, what do we do about her?”

“The only thing keeping us from having her put in for in-patient care right now is the fact she hasn’t tried to harm herself or others,” Megan said.
